Morocco

WELCOME TO MOROCCO

Morocco is the most obvious holiday spot for any European. Three hours on a plane, straight down the time-line and suddenly you are into a warm (if not hot) climate, exotic sights and sounds (and smells) and a fascinating culture.

The Global Artichoke winter office often moves here.

Rabat on the west coast is the capital and has some lovely mixtures of architecture from across the ages; Casablanca is on the coast just south of here – the biggest city, well known for the art deco buildings on the older streets but a bit of an urban sprawl these days.

Marrakech is the party town, land-locked south of Casablanca in an arid region with a wonderful Medina and souks, great restaurants and some excellent hotels and riads. The Atlas are on the doorstep and snow-capped Jbel Toubkal at over 4,000m (13,600ft); over the pass leads to Ouarzazate (Morocco’s film industry), Zagora and the western Sahara.

Two hours’ west is the charming fishing town of Essaouira and south of here are the fantastic beaches of Agadir, Tiznit and the miles and miles of deserted beautiful coastline past Sidi ifni and beyond.

There is a progression here. Marrakech city is a fascinating introduction – the Atlas can be visited – but then the true Moroccan experience should be considered: The tented mobile safari, through the desert or along the beaches of the south. Truly memorable!
