This amazing country has stunning scenery of different kinds everywhere. In the north, the dramatic Simien Mountains, south of Addis Ababa are the seven Rift Valley lakes, east of Awassa are the Bale Mountains, south are coffee plantations, in the west tropical rainforest. Mount Ert’ale is the only volcano in the world with a permanent lava lake and in the north, the Danakil Desert, the lowest point below sea level on Earth, has amazing mineral formations of every colour of the rainbow.
An incredible wealth of historic sites around the country describe Ethiopia’s past defined by its own diverse cultures rather than the influence of colonialism; unusual in an African country. Axum, Lalibela, Gondar and Bahir Dar – an empire with its own alphabet and notation system – where churches built from 800BC (one believed to house the Ark of the Covenant) including the great rock-hewn churches rightly categorised as one of the wonders of the world.
Tourism has come lately to Ethiopia but Global Artichoke can now put together excellent itineraries to suit your taste – scenic, cultural, historic – with a touch of luxury but always fascinating.
